The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) has apparently placed the protection of the elk herd in this state above the rights of property owners to protect their property and livelihood.

Vicki Reinhardt just wants to enjoy her horses, her home, and her boarding business. Her ten-acre ranch has been invaded by elk, dozens of elk. She has tried everything to scare them away from her horses and their food supply. Nothing works. The health and safety of her horses are at risk. And what is the DNR's response? They are investigating her for illegally baiting the elk. Sound unbelievable?

But this year? "It got worse," Reinhardt said. "At any time I could have anywhere upwards of 30 elk here."....   More.

"The last thing this state needs is a public relations nightmare. Despite the economy, the MDNR continues to assert authority as the reigning department in saving the economy by playing the taketh away game and then shove legislation down our throats demanding more money...."

"The Elk were brought into this area by the DNR. So shouldn't the DNR be responsable for them. Are they going to investigate all the farmers in the area? Are they going to try to take every one's land and incorporate it into the "BIG WILD"? By intimidation and added strain to the land owners in the area. "

"A couple of weeks ago I recieved a message about a farmer in Baraga with much the same problem except the it was deer that were the problem. When the MDNR was contacted to see if it could offer him relief the answer was "shoot them". This was unacceptable and had he done that he would have been an outcast in this area where there are probably less than 5 deer per square mile. If the problem animals were wolves I don't think they would have said "shoot them".I'm beginning to think that Cervids have less standing in the eyes of some game managers than rats..."
