Grosse Pointe Shores tries to head off problem with coyotes

Traps have not worked yet to capture three roving animals, so city may have to resort to sharpshooters.

Maureen Feighan / The Detroit News / Jan. 23, 2009

GROSSE POINTE SHORES -- "Three coyotes are on the prowl amid the gated mansions and landscaped yards of this upscale community, and the city's public safety director says he may have to use sharpshooters if traps don't work.

Public Safety Director Stephen Poloni said the city is contracting with Westland-based Varmint Police to trap the three canines, but, he adds, they're "called wily for a reason" and they've evaded traps so far. No pets have been killed, but Poloni worries it could come to that unless the coyotes are removed...."  Click here to read more.

Sharpshooters to Control Coyotes

Jan. 20, 2009 - BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. (AP)

"Bloomfield Hills police want to use sharpshooters to help control coyotes in the Oakland County community.

Public Safety Director Rick Matott tells The Detroit News for a story Tuesday he has ordered rifles with silencers and scopes for two of his 26 officers.

Bloomfield Hills has at least five coyote dens. Coyotes have killed at least one pet dog in the city about 15 miles northwest of Detroit.

Coyotes increasingly are nuisances throughout southeast Michigan. State officials say there is no evidence of coyotes attacking people in Michigan.

More than 35 coyotes were trapped in Livonia after an increase in sightings five years ago."

Victim's Father Speaks Out About Son's Coyote Attack

By Jenny Rizzo / Story Published: Apr 17, 2009 at 11:29 PM EDT

Roger Bush has seen the coyotes in his backyard for years but he's never had one approach his family until recently. "I couldn't believe it. He's a young kid, so I was like, yeah, sure. But after that, sure I was concerned."

The attack happened on March 31st at 2am on Sweeney Street. The coyote circled Bush's son and then lunged at him. Bush said his 21-year-old son fortunately only has a puncture wound in his leg, but he still has to go through the series of rabies shots......  More.

The next time Michael Barnes walks his dog in the Greenbelt, he'll be carrying a bat.

The 60-year-old semi-retired contractor is an animal lover, but he's not afraid to bash a coyote if one attacks again. Yes, again.

"I'm still shook up," Barnes said yesterday, two days after a coyote chased him up a tree near Anderson and Innes roads. "This guy," he said of the coyote, "was either rabid or very hungry."

Barnes said he was walking his dog Blue -- a white, 11-year-old, 5-lb. toy poodle cross-mix -- through...  More.
